A Change of Scenery

From Hong Kong Island and Queen Mary Hospital to Lantau Island and home!

A Change of Scenery
A (masked) snuggle with Lucy Rocket, support poodle extraordinaire.

After 67 days in isolation, Friday brought something new!

Transcript from the video:

Heather: Every day I come here to Queen Mary Hospital to visit Michael. And then I leave. By myself. To go home. But not today. Today I have someone very special with me.

Michael: It’s me!

Heather: It’s Michael! And we’re going home for good! He’s been discharged.

Michael: Officially discharged.

Heather: Yep. Awesome!

We left the hospital Friday at 3:00 pm, and a little over an hour later (once again using the creative door-to-door transportation which is allowed into our little beach village, where private vehicles are banned and taxis can only go to the entrance) we walked into our home to start the next phase of this very long journey of Acute Leukemia.

Lucy Rocket, our tiny 15-year-old poodle was so relieved to finally just sit in Michael’s arms. We have a whole list of restrictions around his contact with her (in case you thought the order to get rid of all my plants was bad, wait until you hear how the transplant team reacted to the news we had a dog in our home), which we carefully followed (she had a bath right before we got in, he’s masked in the photo above and he washed his hands right after touching her, then shortly after that he showered and changed clothes) because home is where the dog is and Michael is well and truly home!

We’ll tell you all about the post-transplant at home phase shortly (we’ve had an extremely bumpy start) but wanted to just let this milestone of Michael being discharged after 67 days of isolation in Queen Mary Hospital have it’s own space. This whole time Michael has had a view across the water of our building on Lantau Island from his hospital room on Hong Kong Island. It was a gorgeous view. But not quite as gorgeous as seeing his face right here next to me in our home!

We had technical difficulties getting this post out, so please overlook the delay and join the celebration of gratitude today! In addition to giving thanks for Michael being home, we are grateful for our in house tech support (and bone marrow donor), Benjamin! 💚

More soon!
